Become a Social Justice Leader in Your CommunityWe are an Association of small family owned funeral homes, gravely concerned if you will pardon the pun, with the lack of meaningful or healthy regulation of our profession. We are equally concerned with the lack of organization among small family firms which allows our large competitors to go to regulators telling them there is no such thing as small business consensus, something which we have been able to prove, simply is not true. We did this by building the largest consortium of family owned funeral homes in the North America, roughly 4,000 firms, to oppose the attempt by Service Corporation International (SCI) of Houston, Texas to trademark “family funeral care”. They had already began to rename some of their thousands of funeral homes. For example White Funeral Chapel in Schenectady New York was renamed: WHITE FAMILY We were successful in defeating SCI in Canada, and have been successful so far in the US, although that battle is far from over. In short the difference in care provided by different types of funeral home is likely much greater than your community may suspect. Please don’t take our word for it! The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Marketplace Funeral Expose said it all (http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/services/funerals/). But can anything be done? The answer is a resounding yes, because we have been doing it for almost thirty years, and successfully for the last twenty years. Our two video clips, A Call to Action in Support of the Bereaved, and Partners in Care, Funeral Ethics 101, A Guide to a healthier Regulatory Environment can be ordered from our website here for $9.99 plus shipping, or from your local family funeral home member. If they are not already, ask them why? Sincerely, Tom Crean |
